Smedvig Capital

Smedvig Capital is the London arm of the Smedvig Family Office and invests in private market assets on behalf of the Smedvig family and other select family offices. Founded by Johnny Hewett and Peter Smedvig, we’ve been investing since 1996 with a particular focus on Private Equity and Venture Capital.

Smedvig Capital is part of the Smedvig Family Office, which has been investing out of Stavanger, Norway for generations.

The Smedvig story began over 100 years ago when Peder Smedvig established his first shipping company. In 1935, Smedvig Tankships was established, and then from 1973, Smedvig expanded into petroleum exploration and production, investing in drilling rigs via Smedvig ASA. That business was listed on the Oslo Stock Exchange in 1990 and on the New York Stock Exchange in 1996. The same year saw Smedvig exit the shipping business and marked the establishment, by Johnny Hewett and Peter Smedvig, of Smedvig Capital London to invest in Private Equity.

In 2006, Smedvig exited its offshore drilling operations and established the Smedvig Family Office, with Smedvig Investment Management receiving regulatory approval in Norway the following year.

Philanthropy has also always been at the heart of Smedvig’s activities and in 2019 North Star was founded, by the fourth generation of the Smedvig Family, as a nonprofit organization aiming to improve the lives of young people facing challenges and hardship.

During recent years Smedvig has continued to adapt. Today we still invest in disruptive and innovative businesses, but as part of a broader mandate including real assets, private equity, public markets, fixed income, and hedge funds. Through four generations the Smedvig legacy has been characterized by change and renewal and this is how we continue to shape our future.
