Ho Chi Minh City Accelerates AMD R&D Center Investment to Boost Vietnam's Semiconductor Industry

Ho Chi Minh City has directed its Department of Science and Technology to draft a comprehensive plan supporting AMD's establishment of a research and development center.

This move aligns with the city's ambitious 2026 strategy to propel Vietnam's semiconductor sector forward.

Semiconductor Industry Roadmap

The development plan must be submitted within the first quarter of 2026, targeting four foreign direct investment projects this year.

It builds directly on the memorandum of understanding signed between AMD and Ho Chi Minh City in June 2025.

Talent Development Goals

By 2030, the partnership commits to training at least 9,000 highly skilled professionals in semiconductors.

The city aims to enroll 3,000 students in graduate programs, 300 in master's, and 40 in doctoral studies related to the field.

Graduation targets include 1,400 bachelor's, 110 master's, and six PhD holders annually to build a robust workforce.

Economic Impact and Future Vision

The AMD R&D center will prioritize hiring Vietnamese talent and promote AMD solutions across municipal agencies.

Collaborations with Nvidia and Qualcomm will further enhance semiconductor capabilities in Vietnam's largest economic hub.

Future initiatives encompass regulatory sandboxes for data centers, AI training programs, and smart city tenders in education and healthcare.

This investment positions Ho Chi Minh City as a rising global contender in high-tech innovation and manufacturing.
