Singapore Maritime Sector Accelerates AI Adoption with MPA-SSA Partnership for Boosted Productivity

Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) and Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding on April 22, 2026, to accelerate AI adoption across the maritime sector.

This collaboration targets key functions including ship agency, ship management, chartering, shipping operations, and bunkering to enhance overall efficiency.

Core Resources and Support Mechanisms

Participating companies will access a dedicated knowledge base of proven maritime AI use cases, connections to solution providers, and opportunities to pilot AI applications.

The partnership leverages AI Singapore's AI Readiness Index (AIRI) framework to assess company maturity and guide structured AI implementation steps.

Training programs, developed with Institutes of Higher Learning and service providers, will equip employees with skills for AI-driven roles and strategic planning.

Upcoming Engagements and Milestones

The SSA has initiated AI training runs with 21 companies, with a full rollout scheduled for later in 2026.

A Maritime AI Forum is planned for the second half of 2026 to showcase real-world applications, identify new use cases, and foster innovation projects.

“AI will increasingly shape how maritime operations are planned and executed,” stated Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA.

Singapore, as a longstanding global maritime hub, has historically invested in digital transformation to maintain its competitive edge.
