Singapore Upgrades EV Charging to SS 722 Standard: Safer Wireless, Mobile Tech for Future-Proof Infrastructure

Singapore has officially elevated its national EV charging standard, Technical Reference 25 (TR 25:2022), to the authoritative Singapore Standard SS 722, effective April 1, 2026.

Announced by Enterprise Singapore, this upgrade expands specifications for design, installation, maintenance, and operation to bolster safety and reliability amid rapid EV adoption.

Key Enhancements Driving Safer EV Infrastructure

The update stems from a thorough review by a public-private Working Group under the Singapore Standards Council, supported by the Land Transport Authority.

Managed by the Institution of Engineers, Singapore, the standard now covers electrical safety, low-powered charging, wireless power transfer (WPT), DC EV charging, battery swapping, and mobile systems.

For wireless charging, vehicles with dedicated receivers can simply park over a pad, with new safety protocols preventing hazards to users and the public.

Cybersecurity measures protect charging management systems, while guidelines enable smart grid integration for efficient energy use.

DC charging aligns with the latest IEC standards, imposing stricter temperature controls, cable insulation checks, and precise power output.

Battery swapping extends to four-wheeled vehicles like electric heavy goods vehicles, and mobile chargers on vans provide on-demand service anywhere.

Existing type-approved chargers under prior TR 25 rules require no re-certification, with a 2.5-year transition for new ones to comply.

This evolution from TR 25 builds on Singapore's EV push, ensuring consistent quality across an expanding island-wide network.

Impacts include a safer, more reliable charging experience, accelerating EV uptake and reducing range anxiety for users.

Looking ahead, SS 722 paves the way for innovative solutions like wireless and mobile tech, aligning with Singapore's green mobility vision.
