Singapore EMA Launches Geothermal Energy Feasibility Study to Enhance Energy Resilience and Decarbonization

The Energy Market Authority (EMA) of Singapore has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a comprehensive study on the feasibility of deploying geothermal energy systems.

This initiative aims to assess the technical, environmental, and commercial viability of next-generation geothermal technologies in the city-state.

Singapore's Strategic Shift to Geothermal Power

The study builds upon a nationwide non-invasive geophysical survey conducted in 2024 to identify potential geothermal resources beneath Singapore's surface.

Prior research, including reports from July 2025, has highlighted possible geothermal sources suitable for power generation, heating, and cooling.

Singapore, heavily reliant on imported natural gas for over 95% of its electricity, seeks diverse low-carbon alternatives to meet its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

Geothermal energy offers a stable, baseload renewable source, unlike intermittent solar and wind, potentially transforming the nation's energy security.

The RFP invites proposals from interested parties, with submissions due by June 29, 2026, and the consultant expected to be appointed later this year.

Successful deployment could reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and support the Singapore Green Plan 2030.

Experts anticipate the study will evaluate deep geothermal systems, adapting technologies from oil and gas sectors like enhanced geothermal systems (EGS).

If feasible, geothermal could provide round-the-clock clean energy, complementing ongoing expansions in solar PV and regional power imports.

This move underscores Singapore's proactive approach to overcoming land constraints in its renewable energy transition.

Outcomes from the study may pave the way for pilot projects, positioning Singapore as a leader in urban geothermal innovation in Southeast Asia.
