Bluecore Energy Secures $50M Seed Round to Revolutionize Portable Clean Nuclear Power

Bluecore Energy has raised an oversubscribed $50 million seed round just two months after launching, following a $10 million pre-seed round and its emergence from stealth.

The company builds small modular reactors (SMRs) on floating barges to generate clean energy for ports and nearby infrastructure, allowing power to be transported wherever it is needed.

Portable Nuclear Tech Gains Momentum

The approach draws on portable nuclear technology used by the U.S. Navy for decades, while making the reactors smaller and more mobile. Bluecore Energy says its power sources can be moved in days rather than requiring years and new infrastructure.

The startup has already launched two floating barges and has partnered with the Department of Transportation Maritime Division, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the U.S. Coast Guard. Bluecore is undergoing NRC and Coast Guard review of its product design, which could lead to certification of its floating nuclear power plant.

Interest has come from multiple ports, AI data centers, and communities seeking clean energy and water.

Broader Impacts on Energy Access

Supply chain management is expected to be a major challenge as Bluecore works to secure the hardware needed to build portable electricity infrastructure at a pace that can match demand. The team comes from SpaceX, Rivian, and Toyota and is applying strategies from those companies to secure critical parts.

The $50 million funding will support continued product development, regulatory work, nuclear fuel purchases, and hiring as the company advances its floating nuclear power plant toward certification.

Bluecore already has barges and a reactor and is preparing to order nuclear fuel for delivery to a partner at a national nuclear laboratory.

Ultimately, the company says its mission is to democratize access to clean energy. Founder Kofi Asante said his philosophy is that access to clean energy and clean water should be a human right.
