TotalEnergies Launches 30MW Solar Project Construction in Malaysia to Power Tech Giants' Data Centers

TotalEnergies has reached financial close and begun construction on a major 30 MWac solar power plant in Kulim, Kedah, marking a key step in Malaysia's green energy transition.

The project, spanning 115 acres with around 80,000 photovoltaic panels, will generate significant clean electricity sold through long-term power purchase agreements to industrial users.

Project Partners and Financing

TotalEnergies holds a 49% stake, partnering with Solar Citra Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of MK Land Holdings Berhad with 51%.

Financing comes from a MYR 145 million facility led by BNP Paribas Malaysia Berhad, enabling immediate construction after the notice to proceed.

Awarded Under Green Power Initiative

Awarded in August 2023 by the Malaysian Energy Commission under the Corporate Green Power Program, it reflects growing corporate demand for renewables.

One major buyer is Google, which signed a 21-year PPA in late 2025 to supply its expanding data centers in Malaysia with solar power.

Boosting Malaysia's Renewable Goals

Malaysia aims for 32% renewable capacity by 2026 and 70% by 2050, with projects like this helping exceed earlier targets amid surging tech investments.

The plant includes a new 132 kV substation, enhancing the local grid and supporting northern Malaysia's industrialization.

For everyday Malaysians, this means more stable power, potential job creation in Kedah, and reduced reliance on fossil fuels for cleaner air.

Global Strategy and Future Outlook

TotalEnergies leverages its upstream presence and a recent $2.2 billion joint venture with Masdar across Asia to scale renewables rapidly.

This non-obvious angle highlights how foreign-local partnerships like with MK Land bridge technology transfer, fostering Malaysia's solar expertise for future exports in ASEAN.

Industry watchers see this as a model for attracting data center giants, driving RE demand and positioning Malaysia as a green hub in Southeast Asia.
