Mitsubishi Motors Joins Philippines EV Incentive Program, Targets Hybrid Production Launch in 2028

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has announced its entry into the Philippines' Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), marking a significant step in its regional electrification push.

The Japanese automaker plans to start production of a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) model at its Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC) plant in Santa Rosa City, Laguna, by mid-2028.

Strategic Expansion and Historical Presence

MMPC, established in 1963, operates a 21.4-hectare facility with an annual capacity of 50,000 units, underscoring Mitsubishi Motors' long-standing commitment to the Philippine market.

This development follows a key meeting between Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Mitsubishi Motors CEO Takao Kato.

Kato emphasized, “The Philippines has long been one of our most important markets, where we have engaged in production and sales for many years.”

Economic Impact and Investments

In tandem with the HEV production ramp-up, MMPC will pursue additional investments to upgrade facilities for electrification support.

These enhancements aim to bolster the local supply chain and create new employment opportunities in the Laguna region.

The EVIS program is projected to draw PHP 120 billion ($2 billion) in investments, generate substantial economic output, and foster 680,000 jobs nationwide.

Future Prospects for Philippine EV Market

Mitsubishi's involvement signals growing momentum in the Philippines' shift toward sustainable mobility amid Southeast Asia's EV adoption surge.

By 2028, the hybrid models could help meet rising demand for eco-friendly vehicles while reducing reliance on imports.

This move positions Mitsubishi Motors as a frontrunner in hybrid technology, paving the way for broader EV ecosystem development in the archipelago.
