Radiology Partners Acquires Stanford AI Startup Cognita Months After Launch: Founder's Fast-Track Strategy Revolutionizes Healthcare

Louis Blankemeier, CEO and co-founder of Cognita, has sold his healthcare AI startup to Radiology Partners less than a year after its founding.
The acquisition, announced in early 2026, transforms Cognita into the AI business unit of Mosaic Clinical Technologies within the world's largest radiology practice.
From Stanford Lab to Rapid Exit
Blankemeier founded Cognita in October 2024 to commercialize his Ph.D. research from Stanford University in AI foundation models for radiology.
His doctoral work produced Merlin, a groundbreaking 3D vision-language model for CT scan interpretation, published in Nature in 2026.
Prior to Cognita, Blankemeier studied physics and electrical engineering as an undergraduate.
Why Choose Acquisition Over VC Funding?
Blankemeier opted for the sale instead of raising venture capital to protect development velocity and accelerate real-world deployment.
"Selling early didn’t shorten our journey, it accelerated it," Blankemeier stated, highlighting the strategic decision.
The move provides access to massive datasets, live data feeds, clinical resources, and regulatory pathways at Radiology Partners.
Transforming Radiology with AI
Cognita's AI interprets X-rays, CT scans, and generates comprehensive radiology reports across tens of thousands of diagnoses.
Post-acquisition, the technology gains a human feedback flywheel and operational infrastructure for clinical safety and scale.
This partnership aims to significantly increase global access to healthcare by enhancing diagnostic efficiency.
The deal underscores a shift in healthcare AI from research prototypes to integrated production systems with proven performance.
