EU Pledges €560 Million to Supercharge Vietnam's Green Transport and Clean Energy Transition

The European Union has committed €560 million to Vietnam, targeting sustainable transport and clean energy to drive economic growth and reduce pollution.

This investment was revealed at the EU-Vietnam Global Gateway Business and Investment Forum in Hanoi on March 25, 2026.

Revolutionizing Vietnam's Energy Landscape

In the energy sector, European banks signed €230 million in loans with Electricity Vietnam (EVN) for the groundbreaking Bac Ai pumped storage hydropower plant, Vietnam's first.

This forms part of a nearly €400 million Team Europe package, coordinated by institutions like the European Investment Bank (EIB), Agence Française de Développement, and KfW.

Additional funding includes a €23 million boost to the Energy Transition Facility, €20 million for sustainable forest management, and €50 million with Germany and France for green skills training.

Transforming Transport Infrastructure

A €40 million Sustainable Transport Facility will expand public transport, railways, inland waterways, and urban mobility, aiming to unlock over €1 billion in loans.

Separately, EIB Global and Techcombank agreed on €200 million for renewable energy, efficiency, and sustainable transport projects.

This initiative builds on the recent elevation of EU-Vietnam ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and aligns with the EU's Global Gateway strategy.

The investments promise job creation, support for Sustainable Development Goals, and accelerated progress under Vietnam's Just Energy Transition Partnership.

Looking ahead, these efforts position Vietnam toward a carbon-neutral economy by 2050, fostering long-term resilience against climate change.
