ECB Invites Companies to Test AI Agents and Smart Payments for Future Digital Euro

The European Central Bank opened applications on September 28, 2026, for companies to join the next phase of its digital euro innovation platform.

The program will explore whether AI agents could one day use a future digital euro for payments and interact with each other.

Experimentation Track Focuses on Practical Prototypes

Selected participants will build prototypes from January to June 2027 in areas such as electronic receipts, multiparty payments, and conditional payments.

Workshops will separately examine AI-enabled experiences, micropayments, and machine-to-machine interactions while stressing privacy by design.

This second wave builds directly on an earlier round that tested conditional payments with nearly 70 market participants.

Separate Pilot and Long-Term Timeline Shape Market Readiness

A distinct 12-month pilot with 36 payment service providers including Deutsche Bank, Revolut, and Stripe begins in the second half of 2027 using a beta version.

Any full digital euro issuance still requires EU legislation and a later ECB decision, with readiness targeted for 2029 at the earliest.

For founders this signals an early chance to align product roadmaps with emerging standards before wider rollout.

Second-order effects could include new revenue streams for fintechs that master conditional or AI-driven features while traditional banks face pressure to integrate similar tools.
