Crusoe Lands $3.9 Billion to Build Giant Data Centers and Portable AI Factories

Crusoe has secured $3.9 billion in a Series F funding round to expand its data center operations and develop small modular AI factories.

The round values the company at $30.9 billion and was co-led by Atreides Management, Mubadala Capital, and Valor Equity Partners.

Why Modular AI Factories Matter for Faster Growth

The funding will support existing data center projects, including Crusoe’s large site in Abilene, Texas, used by OpenAI, as well as smaller modular AI factories called Spark.

Crusoe manufactures the Spark units at its own facilities so they can be transported by truck and connected to large power sources.

The smaller centers can help Crusoe deploy compute capacity quickly without requiring large construction workforces.

They could also help the company avoid some of the local community backlash that has emerged around massive data center developments.

How Crusoe Shifted from Crypto to Leading AI Infrastructure

Crusoe launched in 2018 as a crypto mining operation powered by flared natural gas before pivoting into AI infrastructure and cloud services.

Its business now includes leasing data center space to customers that bring their own GPUs, renting out its own GPUs, and selling compute power for AI model inference.

The company has customers including Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI, and Oracle, while a recently reported $13 billion, five-year cloud contract with Jane Street will provide GPUs and AI infrastructure.

Crusoe has also discussed a potential IPO with investment banks, according to earlier reporting, although no IPO has been confirmed.

The fresh funding will help Crusoe scale its existing programs and build more AI factories, including large-scale campuses and modular Spark units.
