Clipto's $250M AI Video Search Breakthrough: Taming the Chaos of Personal Media Files

In a major boost for AI-driven personal organization, the startup Clipto has achieved a $250 million valuation just three years after its founding.

The company raised $15 million in fresh funding through an all-equity round at that post-money valuation.

From Robot Memory to Media Mastery

Founder Henry Kang drew on two decades of experience, including early work on robots that remembered object locations during his time at Carnegie Mellon University.

His previous ventures included an AI closet organizer and ZenVideo, which was acquired by Tencent in 2020.

Clipto now lets users search their own computers for videos, audio, images, and documents using simple descriptions or AI assistants like ChatGPT.

While starting with video creators, the tool now serves lawyers, doctors, researchers, and students who make up the majority of its users.

Local AI for Everyday Professionals

The platform has attracted more than 30 million users and hundreds of thousands of paying subscribers while reaching $15 million in annual recurring revenue and staying profitable.

Unlike big tech offerings from Adobe, Apple, and Google that stay within their ecosystems, Clipto works across all files locally on the device.

Recent support for the Model Context Protocol allows secure, user-approved connections to other AI tools without cloud uploads.

This approach highlights a growing demand for tools that help people reuse existing content amid an explosion of generated media.

Looking ahead, the funding will expand AI models and hardware integrations to make personal archives even more accessible.

For ordinary people, it means less time wasted hunting through folders and more focus on creative or professional work.
