Amkor Technology Urges Vietnam's Bac Ninh to Prioritize LPG Supply for $1.6B Semiconductor Factory Expansion

Amkor Technology has called on Vietnam's Bac Ninh province to prioritize LPG supply for its semiconductor factory amid potential energy shortages.

In a recent meeting, Kim Sung Hun, CEO of Amkor Technology Vietnam, stressed the importance of reliable energy for uninterrupted production.

Amkor's Strategic Investment in Vietnam

The facility in northern Bac Ninh, operational since 2024, represents a $1.6 billion commitment by the U.S.-based semiconductor packaging leader.

With a current annual capacity of 420 million items, Amkor seeks approval to scale up to 3.6 billion items annually.

LPG plays a vital role in powering the precise processes of semiconductor packaging and testing at the plant.

Additional Requests and Provincial Support

Kim also proposed 3% capital support from Vietnam and aid for training and retaining semiconductor talent.

Nguyen Hong Thai, Bac Ninh Party Committee Secretary, affirmed the province's willingness to assist while adhering to national policies.

Thai noted that current energy supplies meet demands and highlighted plans for workforce housing and training programs.

Vietnam's Semiconductor Surge and Future Impact

Vietnam's sector has drawn $14.2 billion in FDI across 241 projects, with 166 universities enrolling 134,000 students in related courses yearly.

Prioritizing Amkor's needs could safeguard expansion, foster job creation, and enhance Vietnam's global semiconductor standing.

This collaboration underscores Vietnam's rising prominence in advanced manufacturing amid supply chain shifts.
