According to DealStreetAsia, Sea Limited's e-commerce arm, Shopee is planning for a layoff across multiple markets in Southeast Asia as it optimises its e-commerce business.

The decision was announced to employees yesterday in an international town hall meeting and an email has been sent out to employees affected.

Affected Markets and Ventures

It is reported that the markets affected by the layoff includes Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Shopee’s digital payments arm ShopeePay and food delivery business ShopeeFood are also expected to be facing a layoff.

Almost half of Thailand's ShopeePay and ShopeeFood team have been impacted by the downsizing.

Shopee is also known to be operating in Taiwan, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Colombia aside from the markets in Southeast Asia.

Hiring Halted for Now

Hiring in the Singapore-based technology company has been stopped, with several offers to regional roles being rolled back by the company.

Even though Sea Limited’s business is showing signs of improvement in its overall profitability, most of its revenue is coming from its gaming arm, Garena.

Shopee, on the other hand, continues to suffer from rising inflation and interest rates that are affecting businesses globally.

Community Q&A

Previous Layoffs

Just last March, Shopee had decided to shut down its operation in India, laying off over 300 workers in the country.

Shopee also ceased its operation during early March in France after only five months as it was not meeting expectations.

Meanwhile, Shopee is competing with the likes of Grab and GoTo in its Southeast Asia homeground as they try to dominate the e-commerce space.

Apart from Shopee, several Southeast Asian startups have also reduced their workforce such as Lummo, LinkAja, JD.ID, Pahamify and Zenius to prolong their runway in this economic downturn.
