The UK Ministry of Defence has signed a multimillion-pound contract with Cambridge Aerospace to supply hundreds of Skyhammer interceptors.
Defence Secretary John Healey announced the deal, with initial deliveries set to begin in May and further deliveries expected within the following months, strengthening UK and partner defenses against drone threats.
Skyhammer: A Cost-Effective Shield Against Drones
The Skyhammer interceptor is designed to counter low-cost drones and slow-moving missiles, addressing the growing imbalance between inexpensive offensive systems and costly traditional defenses.
The system has a reported range of around 30 kilometers and a top speed of approximately 700 km/h, offering a relatively low-cost interception solution.
Founded in late 2024, Cambridge Aerospace is a rapidly emerging defense startup focused on next-generation counter-drone technologies.
Scaling Production and Expanding Reach
The contract includes both interceptors and launch systems, supporting rapid deployment and operational readiness.
The agreement is also expected to support job creation in the UK, as the company scales production to meet demand.
In addition to UK deployment, the systems are expected to support partner countries in the Gulf region, particularly in countering threats such as Shahed-style drones.
Addressing Modern Warfare Challenges
The deal reflects a broader shift in defense strategy toward cost-effective and scalable solutions, as militaries adapt to the widespread use of drones in modern conflicts.
By focusing on affordability and rapid deployment, Skyhammer aims to close the gap between traditional high-cost defense systems and the increasing availability of low-cost aerial threats.
Future Outlook
The partnership underscores the UK’s commitment to supporting homegrown defense innovation while strengthening its response to evolving security challenges.
As demand for counter-drone technologies continues to rise, solutions like Skyhammer are expected to play an increasingly important role in modern air defense strategies.
