Singapore's 10th PIER71 Smart Port Challenge Launches Enhanced Scaling Support for Maritime Startups

Singapore has launched the 10th edition of the PIER71 Smart Port Challenge during Singapore Maritime Week 2026.

The initiative, led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and NUS Enterprise, aims to propel maritime startups toward commercialization and global expansion.

New Initiatives to Accelerate Growth

The challenge introduces Mentors-in-Residence Plus (MIR+), pairing scaling startups with maritime experts and international accelerators for market entry.

Venture2Capital connects participants with investors through targeted training and networking opportunities.

MPA has also unveiled an innovation track under the Maritime Cluster Fund to anchor technology and venture-building in Singapore.

Global Outreach and Innovation Focus

In 2026, the program will expand outreach to key markets including China, France, India, the Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, the UK, and the USA.

It features 20 innovation opportunities across four pillars: Next-Generation Port, Smart Shipping, Maritime Green Technologies, and Digitalization, backed by 19 partners.

Proven Impact and Future Potential

Shortlisted startups will join a ten-week SPC Accelerate program with mentorship, workshops, and access to the MINT Fund for pilots and development.

Since 2018, the challenge has supported nearly 170 startups that raised over S$150 million in funding, with over 30 technologies deployed via MINT.

Alumnus Groundup.ai exemplifies success, using AI for asset optimization and securing Series A funding after scaling across Asia and the Middle East.

MPA CEO Ang Wee Keong emphasized shifting focus from ideas to scalable impact, strengthening Singapore as a maritime innovation hub.

Dr. Tan Sian Wee of NUS highlighted overcoming adoption barriers to drive international growth in the sector.
