SiFive has secured a $3.65 billion valuation following a $400 million oversubscribed funding round.
The latest investment was led by Atreides Management, with participation from Nvidia, Apollo Global Management, D1 Capital Partners, Point72 Turion, T. Rowe Price, and Sutter Hill Ventures.
From Humble Beginnings to Expanding AI Ambitions
Founded in 2015 by engineers from UC Berkeley who pioneered the open-source RISC-V chip design, SiFive has expanded its focus from embedded systems into AI data center applications.
This marks the company's first major funding since a $175 million round in March 2022, led by Coatue Management at a $2.33 billion pre-money valuation, with participation from Intel Capital, Qualcomm Ventures, and Aramco Ventures.
Revolutionizing Chip Design with RISC-V
SiFive specializes in licensing customizable RISC-V chip designs, offering an open and neutral alternative to proprietary architectures like Intel’s x86 and Arm.
The company is now developing high-performance CPUs for AI data centers, moving beyond its traditional embedded system use cases.
These designs are built to work with Nvidia’s CUDA software and NVLink Fusion platform, which enables different CPUs to integrate into Nvidia-powered AI systems.
Broader Market Context and Future Direction
In a competitive landscape featuring companies like Intel, AMD, and Arm, SiFive’s open and customizable approach differentiates it from traditional chipmakers.
Rather than manufacturing chips, the company licenses its designs to customers who adapt them for their own needs, similar to Arm’s earlier business model.
With fresh capital and backing from major investors including Nvidia, SiFive is positioning itself to accelerate development of next-generation CPU designs for AI infrastructure.
