NTT DATA, in collaboration with Sumitomo Corporation and JA Mitsui Leasing, Ltd., has announced the formation of a new company, Intra-Asia Marine Networks Co., Ltd. (I-AM NW), to spearhead a transformative submarine communication project.
This initiative will see the construction and operation of the Intra-Asia Marine Cable (I-AM Cable), a large-scale subsea cable system connecting Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore, with additional links planned for Korea, the Philippines, and Taiwan.
The Strategic Importance of Subsea Connectivity in Asia
The I-AM Cable, with a capacity of 320 Tbit/s, is designed to meet the soaring demand for data transmission driven by the rise of AI and digital transformation across Asia.
Historically, subsea cables have been the backbone of global internet connectivity, with Asia serving as a critical hub for data exchange between East and West.
Japan, as an island nation, has long relied on such infrastructure, but geopolitical tensions and regulatory challenges have underscored the need for secure and diversified routes, as noted in recent industry analyses.
Geopolitical and Economic Impacts
The new cable system strategically avoids the South China Sea, a region often associated with geopolitical concerns, ensuring a safer and more reliable connection pathway.
This move is seen as a response to growing global uncertainties, positioning the I-AM Cable as a pivotal asset for data security and economic stability in the region.
Economically, the project, valued at approximately $1 billion, is expected to boost digital infrastructure investments and create opportunities for tech-driven businesses in the connected countries.
Looking Ahead: A Digital Future
Looking to the future, the I-AM Cable could pave the way for enhanced collaboration in AI, cloud computing, and other emerging technologies across Asia.
NTT DATA’s ongoing commitment to subsea projects, such as the recently commissioned Malaysia, India, Singapore Transit (MIST) cable, reflects a broader vision of seamless digital integration.
As the digital landscape evolves, initiatives like I-AM NW are set to play a crucial role in shaping a connected, innovative, and resilient Asia.
