Ever since the very first “Shake, Rattle and Roll” trilogy became the sleeper hit of the 1984 Metro Manila Film Festival and went on to spawn one of the most popular local film franchises of all time, horror has become a staple genre in the annual Christmas filmfest.

Credited as co-producer of the film for her own Purple Bunny Productions, Judy Ann Santos said she’s thrilled not just to be a part of the 50th anniversary of the MMFF but also to return to one of her favorite film genres and to be directed by no less than Chito Roño.

During the film’s recent Grand Mediacon, Martinez explained the story behind the title, “Espantaho,” which is actually a Tagalog word that means “scarecrow.” Martinez said they were looking for a Filipino word synonymous with scarecrow when they came across, “espantaho” which is actually borrowed from the Spanish word Espantajo, the root of the word being pantaho or the scrarecrow.
