What is your 'quick' hiring approach?

How do you quickly determine if a person is worth hiring or not?

Any tips would be great.

I kinda go by the belief that you should be slow to hire and quick to fire

However at times, you come across 'gems' that you'd love to have on your team. Most of the time you'd know from your gut where that person is suitable.

For me, here are some criteria I use to judge:

  • Work ethic - This only applies if you've worked with or witnessed them working before. If not, scratch this off your list.
  • Attitude and curiousity - How do they see the world. Are they optimistic, curious, and open to learning? How do they carry themselves (confidence). Pro Tip, I tend to avoid those who are too confident.
  • How they handle stress - Ask them difficult or direct questions and observe how they handle the pressure. This is a big one as there WILL be pressure in the work environment. Most of today's strawberry generation can't handle a little pressure.
  • Do they have the skillsets and are they independent - Obviously this is necessary for the role. However on a deeper level, try to find out if they are independent in the way they work. Can they figure things out on their own, or are they the type who needs to be spoonfed.

There's probably more to this but I'd sum it up as: Having the attitude, skills, and stomach to handle pressure.
