Are programmers replaceable now with AI?

I used to think that my background in programming was something that differentiated me from others. It's like a skill that could turn ideas into anything.

But now with AI, it seems any Tom, Dick, and Harry could 'generate' an app with some prompts. And this is going to get better over time. I feel like I'm going to eventually be replaced.

As a programmer of over 20 years, this scares me too.

However at this point in time, I don't think programmers will be completely replaced by AI/vibe coding, but rather it will be used to supplement and accelerate the speed of building products.

Previously it would take an entire team and 6 months to build a complete web + app platform. Today it will probably take 1 month from scratch with AI assisting on the design/generation of code/initial prototype.

I also believe the shift will be slower in the enterprise space, as there are many other factors to consider aside from just building the product. For example:

  • Compliance / standards
  • Security
  • Permissions / board controls
  • etc.
