Tencent's social app, WeChat has just launched a mini program called "Tencent e-CNY Wallet" and is still in its A/B testing phase, according to Pandaily.
The mini program allows payment in digital yuan or e-CNY and this marks a broader adoption for e-CNY in all test areas.
Early April, the 3rd batch of e-CNY pilot cities were announced which include Beijing and Zhangjiakou, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangzhou, Fuzhou and Xiamen, as well as six cities that will be holding the 19th Asian Games.
The e-CNY is the digital version of the fiat currency issued by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) and operated by authorized outlets.
The mini program allows users to transfer funds, collect payments, and access credit card functions through the program using the digital currency.
Before users can open the mini program, they will need to activate the wallet function of WeBank in the e-CNY app.
In 2021, around US$13 billion worth of payments were made in the digital yuan, according to the PBOC.
Last November 2021, it is reported that at least 10% of Chinese citizens had used digital yuan once.
