Working out what you want to do with your life is difficult, especially when you really think about the wide range of options at your disposal. Sure, not everything will be to your taste, but it’s hard to figure out whether you should try and aim for something that you find enjoyable or if you should focus more on your strengths.

In either case, you’re going to have to take a bit of a leap of faith on whichever you decide. This is because you might not have a clear idea of whether or not this is a job that you will enjoy without experiencing it first. That’s okay, though, and the route to getting there might illuminate you on the answer to this question while also providing you with ample of opportunities to branch off.

Consider Your Qualifications

Once you have a career in mind, you’ll likely start working backward to see where you can start from in order to begin working towards that end goal. This might provide you with an answer in the form of an entry-level job that you can start seeking out straight away. However, you might find that the skills and experience needed for even this are beyond what you currently have.

You can begin to consider the qualifications you already have under your belt and which further ones you can acquire to make your application for such roles more appealing. This might mean that you have to spend a bit of time training and undergoing education before you can launch yourself into your dream career, but it gives you a much stronger chance of coming out on top. It might be that you’re interested in a career in the field of project management, for example, in which case doing some research into acquiring a Project Management Certificate Kelley School of Business might illuminate the path ahead.

Struggling to match the skills required for a role is a frustrating feeling, and it can often feel as though you never had a chance, but it helps to know that there might be something that you can do to tip the scales back into your favor.

Seeking Out Relevant Experience

Not having enough experience required for the job is a disheartening feeling because it seems as though there is so little that you can do to actually change it. While you can go back over your CV and historical experience to emphasize the relevant information, if it comes up significantly short, there might not be much else that you feel you can do.

So, your next course of action might simply be to seek out ways of obtaining this experience. This might sound obvious, but it’s worth considering that these methods won’t always result in paid work, and the end result could simply be that you’re ending up with more experience to put on your CV. Balancing this with other work could be tiring and stressful, but if your dream career is something that you feel passionately about, you may think that these are necessary sacrifices to make.
