Disney has announced that it will be shutting down 18 TV channels in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, and will focus its resources on direct-to-consumer streaming services.

Key Highlights:

  • This change is expected to take place on 1st October 2021.
  • The 18 TV channels shut down include Fox, Fox Action Movies, Fox Family Movies, Fox Movies, Star Movies China, Fox Sports, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, and several more.
  • The company will allocate its resources to focus on direct-to-consumer streaming services, such as Disney+.

Why it matters:

  • Only 4 channels will remain in operation: Star Chinese Channel, Star Chinese Movies, National Geographic channel, and Nat Geo Wild channel.
  • Disney's video streaming platform is currently only available in Singapore and Indonesia.
  • This move further disrupts the content stream to major TV channels, switching consumer behaviour to online streaming instead.
