Rob Baan, a Dutch cress grower, decided to utilize high-tech drones to combat pests in his greenhouses.
As a firm believer in incorporating high technology to kill pests, Baan found PATS Indoor Drone Solutions.
PATS is a startup company that develops advanced drone systems as greenhouse droids to eradicate dangerous insect populations to prevent crop infestation.
“So it sees the moth flying by, it knows where the drone is … and then it just directs the drone towards the moth,” says Kevin van Hecke, PATS chief technical officer.
The drones themselves are simple, but they're powered by advanced technology and special cameras that monitor the airspace in greenhouses immediately killing the moths by crashing into them in mid-flight.
According to Baan, the drone control system is capable of distinguishing between good and poor critter and so, it wouldn't kill insects that poses no harm to plants. .
“It’s still a development product, but we have very good results. We are targeting moths and we are taking out moths every night in an autonomous way without human intervention,” says Bram Tijmons, CEO of PATS.
