Indonesian online language learning platform, Cakap, has raised $3 million in a Series A+ funding round to bring quality education to the market.

The round was led by Heritas Capital, with other investors including Strategic Year Holdings, Investidea Ventures, and Prasetia Dwidharma.

The Cakap mobile application

Established in 2013, Cakap is an online platform that provides two-way interaction between students and professional language teachers via video calling and text conversations.

CEO of Cakap, Tomy Yunus mentions that there is currently a lack of access to high-quality education across the whole of Indonesia, and aims to provide a digital platform to bridge that gap.

He also adds that the Cakap has achieved profitability with student numbers growing 10X since the beginning of the year, and over 30X compared to the same period last year.

Education in Indonesia.

Moving forward, Cakap's new funds will be used to expand the team, as well as improve their technological solutions to scale the business across Indonesia.

With a population of over 267.7 million people, Indonesia is one of the largest education markets in the world with over 3 million teachers across 300,000 schools.

Edutech funding in Indonesia has also been steadily gaining momentum, with funding tripling in 2019, and expected to rise due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From 2016 to 2019, the market for online education has grown rapidly, but in hindsight, it was a modest growth compared to 2020’s growth. The current pandemic has been a tailwind for Cakap and the rest of the online education industry,” said Arya Setiadharma, CEO of Prasetia Dwidharma.
