Malaysia will soon be clamping down on the use of e-scooters, according to a report from local newspaper, Malay Mail.

According to the report, the usage of e-scooters will be prohibited starting from 1st January 2021, and legal action will be taken against those in violation of the law.

The reason to the ban was because the Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department has been receiving many complaints from the public stating that e-scooters were a "hazard" and "a nuisance" for other road users.

Starting 1st Jan 2021, e-scooter riders will also need to apply for a special permission license from the Road Transport Department if they intend to continue riding it publicly.

Without the license, they can only ride in the gazetted areas such as playgrounds and permitted areas around shopping centres.
