WeChat wants to dominate all industries, especially e-commerce.
Earlier this week, Tencent (parent company of WeChat) began testing WeStore, a new "online store" mini program for WeChat, marking their next big push into e-commerce.
Since their launch back in 2017, several million mini programs have been created for the WeChat app.
The new store, also known as Weixin Xiaoshangdian, allows users to list their products, manage their orders, receive payments, handle logistics, as well as handle all their customer support in a single mini program.
The store supports over 1500 product categories, ranging from gadgets/consumer electronics, apparel, home appliances, and more.
Currently, the service is free of charge for users, with no deposits required.
During the testing period, enterprises can apply for up to 50 stores and household businesses can register up to 5 stores.
Tencent is no stranger to the e-commerce world, after investing in e-commerce giants such as JD.com, Pinduoduo, Shopee, and many more.
This new move however, could signify the conglomerate's broader goal of controlling the e-commerce experience of their own, and to create greater competition within their ecosystem of apps.
