AlkaLifeWater, one of the pioneers and market leader in water ionizers, has been partially acquired by a conglomerate based in South Korea.
The acquisition was in the form of an all-cash deal (amount undisclosed) for a controlling stake in the company, according to CEO, Melanie Loh.
AlkaLifeWater was initially founded by the Wong family back in 1998.
Melanie started her career as a corporate banker and was introduced to alkaline water as a remedy to overcome her gastric problems — eventually changing her perception on the importance of drinking the right water type.
After much market research, she noticed the little emphasis placed in hydration health among Malaysians, and saw an opportunity with AlkaLifeWater's products as a means to create greater awareness of the importance in drinking the right water to better one's health.

In 2014, Melanie launched AlkaLife Commercial Sdn Bhd as a brand licensee of AlkaLifeWater, predominantly to penetrate and expand into the corporate market.
As Melanie's business grew, she and her new investment partner, Izaddeen bin Daud came together to acquire AlkaLifeWater in 2018, forming AlkaLife Group — subsequently bringing their products to the consumer market of Malaysian households.
AlkaLifeWater has grown exponentially over the years, serving customers across 17 countries today.
The company has won multiple awards and certifications for their exceptional product quality and customer satisfaction, making them a leader in the water ionizers market.
In fact, all of AlkaLifeWater's products are fully imported from South Korea, with the longest warranty globally of 10 years.
The company today has also expanded their distribution operations beyond Malaysia to Indonesia and even Mauritius.
Moving forward, AlkaLifeWater will operate under a new Korean brand name which will be announced later this year.
With the new acquisition partners on board, the company will be starting a new beauty line, strategically expanding operations across SouthEast Asia, and moving into manufacturing health-based IoT products in the future.
When asked about the decision to proceed with the acquisition, Melanie mentioned that it was in the best interest for both parties, allowing them to tap into each others strengths in capturing a broader market.
“We’re incredibly excited to embark on this new journey with our new partners who have distribution channels globally in various industries. We are very thankful, and believe this synergistic and strategic partnership is mutually beneficial and will set the group on path to scale to a different level. We look forward to the announcement and the launch of our new brand and products really soon.”
