Venue.live is looking for a software developer

Hi, I’m Danilo Cabello, CTO at Venue. I’m looking for a strong, independent-minded, risk-taking fullstack developer that wants to build the future of live streams for cool companies like Shopify, Zapier, and many more.

Our product

We believe that the remote companies of the future will be really good at producing “Twitch-like livestreams” to inspire and engage their teams. Our software platform gives culture-obsessed companies the tools they need to easily turn their recurring rituals - like All Hands, Town Halls, Exec AMAs, and more - into beautiful and interactive livestreams.

This is what a stream on Venue feels like. Pretty cool, right?

Venue is built on top of many technologies. We grow our stack as needed: We try not to reinvent the wheel, so we try to search for existing solutions to buy first, and build it ourselves second. Our backend is Ruby on Rails with PostgreSQL. Our frontend is Typescript, React, Redux and Firebase. We also use WebRTC and HLS for video.

About me

You’ll be working with me, Danilo. One thing people notice about working with me is that I love coming up with memorable (and hopefully simplifying) metaphors, but sometimes they miss the mark and are just plain funny. I am originally Brazilian, and I moved to Canada to join the Toronto tech scene in 2012. I was lucky to join the early team at Wealthsimple in 2015, where I got to work on the foundations of the app that is now used by millions of Canadians everyday.

imgThis clip was taken during a Twitch live-coding session I did. I am not usually this serious, but it is a good representation of my dancing skill level.

Our team

You’ll also get to work with our small, 8-person team. A few of us worked together on that early Wealthsimple team: Our lead engineer, Pei, was a co-op on my dev team at Wealthsimple before starting a couple of his own tech companies. Tom helped us with our early product designs, and Frank turned down a role on our marketing team to grow a successful startup in Singapore. And our CEO Jason worked on many different parts of the business as it grew. We can’t wait for you to meet everyone.

Our funding

Venue is backed by Y Combinator (YC) as part of the Winter 2022 batch. Other notable early-stage YC investments include Airbnb, DoorDash, Stripe, Instacart, Dropbox, and Coinbase.

Working at Venue

We are trying to make a fun product, and have fun building it together. We love when our clients are amazed and inspired by our new features. So we like to listen to our clients and allow them to influence our roadmap while also keeping bandwidth to work on initiatives that we as individual contributors think would have a great positive impact on our product. We plan on staying a remote company, but since a few of us are concentrated in Toronto we might get a place to hang-out here so we can mix up our working environment.

Each week, we have our own recurring ritual on Venue that we used to build our culture. We call it “Total Access Live” and a different VJ (that’s what we call people who work at Venue) host the show and update us on the business.

At Venue, we are building products for a diverse world and we need a diverse team to do that successfully. We strongly encourage applications from everyone regardless of race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

Next steps

If this sounds like something you’re interested in, we’re going to ask for 2 hours and 30 minutes of your time so we can get to know each other:

  1. 1 hour with me, for a friendly technical conversation on your background, experience, and how you’d like to learn and grow with us plus some lightweight coding session
  2. 1 hour with Pei, for a relaxed pairing session where we try to see how your brain tackles and solves problems
  3. 30 minutes with Jason, for a chance for us to do our “sales pitch” to you, and your chance to ask the hardest questions about our business.

Contact me with an introduction, resume and whatever you think will help me assess if our relationship could be a good match.
