About UPchieve

UPchieve is an ed-tech nonprofit that provides free, 24/7 online tutoring and college counseling to low-income high school students in the U.S. Using our app, students can request and get paired with a live, volunteer tutor in under 5 minutes. Our mission is to democratize access to academic support so that all students, regardless of income, have an equal opportunity to finish high school, attend college, and achieve upward mobility. So far, we’ve matched 60,000+ on-demand tutoring requests from 15,000+ students across all 50 states. Our work has also been recognized by Forbes and TIME, and our funders include both Y Combinator and the Gates Foundation.

Who we’re looking for

We’re a small team taking on the monumental challenge of democratizing access to academic support. That means we need team members who are excited by autonomy and willing to work on projects outside the scope of their job description if needed. Regardless of role, we also look for candidates who have a personal connection to our cause or a demonstrable interest in education or serving low-income populations.

About Our Team & Office

We’re a remote-first team (in non-COVID times, we also have a dog-friendly office in Brooklyn, NY) We highly value diversity of experiences and perspectives. 2/3 of the team are people of color, and many of us have personal experience growing up low-income or navigating nontraditional educational pathways We believe working full-time means 40 hours/week. Non-work stuff is important too!

Our Benefits

3 weeks paid vacation AND 3 weeks of paid holidays (including all days between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day) Flexible work schedule (choose your own hours) $1,000 annual professional development budget (learning and self-improvement is a huge part of our work culture!) We offer up to 100% covered health insurance on select plans that start on your first day!

About the opportunity

As the Special Assistant to the Executive Director, you’ll learn the ins and outs of running a tech nonprofit startup by working closely with Aly Murray (UPchieve’s Founder and ED). Your day-to-day work will include a combination of project management, writing, research, and high level administrative work, to enable Aly to focus on strategy and fundraising. This is a great opportunity for an early career professional to tackle a wide range of different projects that are critical to UPchieve’s success and will have a huge impact on our mission!

This might be the right job for you if…

  • You genuinely enjoy writing and keeping things organized
  • You’re equally comfortable with both soft skills and hard skills (e.g., you could see yourself excelling in a wide range of roles, from sales or people ops to engineering or finance)
  • You’re ready to be challenged every day and not afraid to jump into projects and tasks that you’ve never done before
  • You’re passionate about improving educational equity in the U.S. and determined to do whatever it takes
  • You’re excited to grow with our organization and could eventually see yourself specializing in development or operations within UPchieve

How you’ll spend your time

Development (30%)

  • Meeting support for Aly (e.g., researching attendees, drafting follow-up emails)
  • Drafting grant applications and grant reports
  • Managing grant pipeline and sourcing new opportunities to apply for
  • Conference prep for Aly (e.g., researching events and attendees, cold outreach to people Aly should be meeting with, scheduling meetings, etc.)

Operations (30%)

  • Finance support (e.g., coding transactions, finding and storing documentation, submitting reimbursements, depositing checks, etc.)
  • HR support (e.g., creating and reporting out on team surveys, coordinating logistics for the annual review process, drafting new policies for our company handbook, etc.)
  • Event planning (e.g., booking travel and lodging for annual retreats, planning social events, etc.)

Executive Support (25%)

  • Manage Aly’s inbox (e.g., labeling and archiving emails, drafting replies, etc.)
  • Manage Aly’s calendar (e.g., finding ideal meeting times, blocking off time for travel and focused work, etc.)
  • Book Aly’s travel (transportation and lodging)

Special Projects (15%)

  • Conduct research or data analysis to answer questions that Aly poses
  • Tackle special projects spanning all functional areas of the organization

Who we’re looking for

  • You have strong persuasive writing skills and impeccable grammar
  • You’re organized enough for two people (yourself and the ED)
  • You’re an effective multi-tasker who gets things done. You know how to prioritize, and you thoughtfully complete your to-do list
  • You’re comfortable operating with minimal guidance and can quickly incorporate any feedback you receive and apply it to all future projects
  • You’re an analytical and creative problem solver. You can break down new problems, compare options, and come up with recommendations that are based on thoughtful analysis and creativity
  • You’re low ego. You relish the opportunity to work on all aspects of the business, no matter how glamorous or mundane
  • (Bonus) Data self-sufficiency: you’re capable of writing database queries or building complex spreadsheets to answer questions
  • (Bonus) Design sense: you can create visually attractive flyers, presentations, etc.

Right now we can only hire people eligible for employment in the United States, who reside in one of the 50 states. We can't sponsor visas or hire US citizens who live outside the US.

Recruitment Process

Our process: Screening call (~30 mins) → Project (max 3 hours) → Interviews (~3 hours) → (Optional) Team meet-and-greet → Reference checks & offer!

Note that it can take us a few weeks from when you submit your application to invite you to a screening call. Unfortunately, we can typically only bring the top ~15 candidates forward to screening calls (which for some roles may work out to < 10% of applicants).
