About the Role

Our subscription business has grown rapidly over the past few years, driven by our investment in high quality content and an enthusiastic user base. We need an experienced growth leader to help us take the business to the next level, including continuing to grow subscriptions as well as expanding products that drive sponsorship revenue. This person will bring strategic vision as well as execution excellence that is critical to our goal of developing a world-class media operation. The ideal candidate has experience leading growth product teams, the ability to hire and mentor a small product team, and the capacity to own key parts of our subscription business.

Responsibilities

  • Set the high-level strategic direction for the Growth Product organization, including close collaboration and alignment with cross-functional partners, the rest of the Product org, and the C-Suite.
  • Own quarterly business goals, including subscription targets and key funnel metrics.
  • Hire, coach, and manage a team of 2 Growth Product Managers who will, along with you, own individual pieces of the business. Create clear lines of ownership and accountability, and be responsible for their professional development.
  • Define the direction and own the execution of pricing & packaging for our core subscription business. 
  • Evaluate the tradeoffs between different growth opportunities across the business (e.g., growing subscribers  vs. visitors vs. registered users), and develop a multifaceted growth strategy across key surfaces such as article paywalls.
  • Work with the business development team to execute the product work needed for key partnership deals.
  • Own performance management of growth funnels, bringing rigor to the way we monitor business health, identify warning signs, and take action, together with the Finance and Analytics teams.
  • Develop engaging and effective user journeys and ruthlessly prioritize the roadmap and ensure that engineering resources are being directed to the most valuable initiatives.
  • Develop and execute on a vision for how we can invest in growth platforms that scale with our business, e.g. experimentation frameworks, Checkout, paywall tools, landing pages, and more.
  • Set the bar for best-in-class experimentation processes and evangelize these processes across the company.
  • Bring a strong industry perspective that can help us shape our growth strategy and become a leader in the media growth space.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of relevant experience, including experience in high-growth consumer companies and/or subscription businesses.
  • Experience owning growth product strategy and roadmaps.
  • Experience hiring and managing product managers.
  • Strong leader who can work with teams across the company to develop and adapt growth strategies in a rapidly changing environment. 
  • Analytical background and high level of comfort with data.
  • Ability to think and communicate at multiple levels, from high level strategy to implementation details.
  • Practices extreme ownership.
