Who we’re looking for:
We are seeking a Research & Development Engineer with a focus on structural engineering of mass timber to join the Research and Development team in creating innovative products, technology, and processes for the prefabricated construction industry. This role requires a minimum of 5 years' experience and an individual that is passionate about creative problem solving; can see and taste the vision; has the flexibility to quickly adapt to new paradigms; has a resourceful, generalist attitude; finds elegance in the simple solution; believes in being responsible to design for the people that design solution touches not just the solution itself; and is someone willing and excited to get their hands dirty prototyping and testing their designs.
In this position you will:

Deliver on ARPA-E grant-related objectives for the first 2 years:
-
Manage the grant project in collaboration with other team members
-
Facilitate the design and engineering of mass timber products that facilitate grant objectives
-
Identify critical path requirements and align resources to address those needs
-
Work closely with an interdisciplinary team on a wide range of problems
-
Take ownership of work; specify, design, innovate, develop, test, and validate technologies, systems and product platforms for offsite construction

Collaborate with manufacturing to implement factory production processes and automation
-
Create detailed 3D CAD models, perform analysis, and drawings ready for manufacturing
-
Produce assembly instructions that breakdown complex steps into layman’s terms
-
Research both technical and building code requirements for solutions

Work within the team to determine long-term and short-term business strategies
-
Work outside of primary responsibilities as needed
What you bring to the table:
-
Educational background in structural engineering
-
Excellent skill in modeling and analyzing complex assemblies in 3D CAD (Autodesk products primarily)

Demonstrated ability to optimize designs for multiple objectives
-
Strong strategic thinking and communication skills
-
Comfortable with change and uncertainty
-
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
-
Comfortable working independently, as a team member, and as a leader
-
Must be comfortable initiating, facilitating, and/or leading difficult conversations; and receive difficult information or communication in a professional and composed manner

Ability to lift, carry or move up to 50 pounds and perform construction tasks
Great to have:
-
Washington Professional Engineer License
-
Experience in wood structural engineering
-
In-depth experience in the building or construction industries
-
Experience interfacing with Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories to enable regulatory, environmental and product validation objectives

Broad knowledge of materials and innovative manufacturing methodologies

Experience with Revit
-
Experience with structural analysis and FEA software
Position and hours:
-
This is an Exempt and Salaried, full-time position, working approximately 40 hours per week, typically 8AM to 5PM, Monday through Friday. Some hours outside of normal business hours will be required at times.

Some travel to project sites, local authority offices or other special events will be required.

is a hybrid work position with an expectation of at least 1 trip every other month to Seattle/Spokane and Pullman, WA.
Compensation and benefits:

Salary range between $91,000 - $110,000 annually
