Shape the Face of Cancer Treatment at Luminate Medical

Our vision is to build innovative new products which revolutionise the patient experience of cancer treatment. Our first product is a wearable medical device to prevent hair loss caused by cancer chemotherapy in a portable, comfortable, and effective way. Chemotherapy induced hair loss is a rapidly growing €8 billion global market with multiple established public companies in the industry. We’re seeking to recruit talented individuals with the ambition to drive the development of a new and innovative approach and join the management team at our Galway office.

The Role – Graduate Research and Development Engineer

The Graduate R&D Engineer will help shape the product development cycle of new patient-facing medical devices for people undergoing cancer treatment. This role offers applicants the chance to join a well-funded growth-stage companies as an early employee with high-level insight into the growth of a start-up company. You will form a core part of a dynamic team and help shape the company culture.

What You Will Do:

  • Product design of medical devices for solving side effects of cancer treatment, including:

    o	Understanding user and clinical needs and translating these to technical requirements,
    
    o	Generating and documenting new design ideas through sketching and CAD modelling,
    
    o	Building prototypes for assessment in the lab and in clinical studies,
    
  • Testing and development of design concepts for novel medical devices through:

    o	Designing test methods and writing verification/validation protocols,
    
    o	Conducting tests following the scientific method,
    
    o	Gathering test data, interpreting data, and presenting conclusions for new designs,
    
    o	Debugging experiments and design flaws.
    
  • Complete design and test documentation as part of regulatory submissions for medical device clearance, such as:

    o	Updating engineering documents such as technical drawings or test procedures,
    
    o	Documenting test procedures, logging data and writing conclusions.

Experience Requirements – The Ideal Candidate Must Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or similar.
  • Strong knowledge of CAD software such as SolidWorks and/or Creo.
  • Strong practical skills and experience working with tools such as 3D Printing.
  • Good mechanical design and understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience in writing technical reports.

Experience Advantages – It Would be Advantageous to Have:

  • 1-2 years medical device R&D experience (preferably some in an SME environment).
  • A demonstrated track record of interest in medical devices through projects, internships, or placements.
  • Experience developing Finite Element Analysis models.
  • Previous experience in Product Design and Human Factors Engineering.
  • 3D CAD surfacing skills.
  • Experience with Excel / Minitab to input and analyse test data.
