Volta Labs is looking for an engineer who enjoys collaboratively and creatively solving problems for interdisciplinary and robust automation systems.

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Volta Labs, Inc. (https://www.voltalabs.com/) is an MIT spin-off that has unlocked powerful new capabilities with our proprietary fluidic technology. Our vision is to make biological automation as agile, scalable, and reliable as digital electronics. To realize this vision we are building a platform technology by engineering the full-stack -- hardware, software, chemistry, and biology.

We are at an exciting inflection point as we emerge out of stealth mode and scale up. Alongside our collaborators, we have demonstrated powerful and unique competencies that are now being developed into robust products for the decentralization of Next Generation Sequencing. This beachhead application is on the bleeding edge of innovation and adoption, and we intend to shape the future of bio-automation with our paradigm shifting platform.

Working at Volta Labs means having big ambitions for solving the world’s most challenging problems. We take pride in having a wealth of internal knowledge and experiences across all aspects of technology, and we hope that you can add fresh perspectives to that! We strive to build a community of collaborative, disruptive, and respectful team members who feel empowered to be themselves every day.

Job Responsibilities

  • Own the design and development of the electronics hardware and firmware for our next generation instruments.
  • Lead projects to design, bring-up, program, test, debug, document and implement reliable electronics hardware including the integration of single board computers, a variety of sensors/actuators, and electrode activation circuits for droplet manipulation.
  • Regularly collaborate and coordinate with mechanical, software, and biology teams to rapidly design, test, and debug holistic system-level solutions for a complex hardware-software-biology instrument.
  • Create and maintain systems and requirements documentation to organize and share information across our multi-disciplinary team.

Your Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering or physics degree.
  • 5+ years of engineering experience in a professional setting.
  • 2+ years experience leading a team of high-performing electrical engineering professionals.
  • Highly proficient in conceptualizing, designing, and analyzing mixed-signal circuitry assemblies in CAD (Altium) and in building in-house prototypes rapidly.
  • Extensive experience writing bare-metal (C/C++) firmware for embedded microcontrollers (ARM, STM32), ideally in a production environment.
  • Excellent fundamental engineering knowledge and have examples of applied engineering success through work, projects, or academic endeavors.
  • Ability to collaborate in a fast-paced team environment with rapidly changing priorities: pro-active team player who thinks ahead, plans, and suggests solutions.
  • You are a continuous learner who embraces a growth mindset.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills with the ability to synthesize technical information and present it to specialists and non-specialists.

Nice to Have

  • Experience integrating single-board computers into from-scratch PCB designs.
  • Particularly skilled in and excited about designing robust and reliable high voltage systems (~300V).
  • Experience transitioning complex electromechanical products from early concept into production (especially including compliance and certification processes).
  • Familiarity with E&M physics including understanding/modeling/measuring electric and magnetic fields.
  • You have a successful track record working with cross-functional development teams.

Volta Labs offers both competitive cash and equity compensation, as well as health, dental, and vision coverage, and unlimited paid time off. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status, and actively seek out and value diverse perspectives. Women, people of color, people who are differently abled, and members of the LGBTQ+ community are encouraged to apply. Even if you don't check every box, but see yourself contributing, please apply. Help us build an inclusive community that will change the face of bio-automation!
