The Job
Mable is a fast-paced health tech startup experiencing high growth (Y Combinator S21, backed by Silicon Valley VCs). We are looking for a part-time Frontend Engineer experienced in HTML, CMS, JS, and PHP. Our stack is built on PHP (Laravel Framework) and Python.
This position is remote, working within a small but growing global team with excellent flexibility. We highly encourage all in our team to contribute ideas regarding marketing & content strategies, UI, design, and functionality, allowing everyone to have a meaningful impact on our product.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone who desires to progress within a team growing exponentially over the next year, as we see this role going full-time (if you want) this year.
What you'll do
Research, guide, and execute frontend architecture changes, including but not limited to creating and modifying pages written in HTML/CSS/JavaScript and integrating with code written in PHP (Laravel Framework/Blade). Work with stakeholders (other Mable teams or external partners) to understand requirements, propose solutions, and build something to help those stakeholders succeed. Contribute to improving front-end web apps and components, emphasizing readable, reusable, and testable code. Measure and resolve performance bottlenecks using tools like Chrome DevTools, Lighthouse, WebPagetest, or custom tooling. Refactor or improve existing code as languages, frameworks, or techniques evolve. Help the team pick appropriate tools to solve new problems as they arise. Work closely with our product, design, and UX teams to create amazing and intuitive experiences that make it effortless to connect different apps together. Help put tools, processes, and documentation in place to help us become a better, more effective organization. Help teach your colleagues new skills through code review, discussions, and mentoring. Help us all become better engineers and humans. Ship to users every day while having lots of autonomy in terms of code and feature ownership. Help to guide Mable's tech implementations in the future to enable us to continue to improve our platform.
About You
You love code. You love to take raw ideas and build great products with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. You know JavaScript is imperfect, but you embrace its functional side and genuinely enjoy coding with it. You might like to talk about obscure computer science topics, but really, you just want to write simple code and ship new products and features to customers (or improve existing ones). You value collaboration. You understand that building modern software is a team sport, and you enjoy working as part of a tight-knit team. You’re happy to pitch in and help the team, whether by reviewing code, pairing on a tricky problem, or just thinking about how to solve the challenges we’re facing. You can balance lots of concerns. Frontend apps must consider performance (using networks and devices we can't control), customer demands, A/B tests, UX research, accessibility, code quality, a rapidly changing ecosystem of languages and modules, and so on. And we actually want to ship things too! You can balance those demands and keep the needle moving forward without getting overwhelmed. You advocate for the user. You have a keen eye for great design and are empathetic to the end user’s needs. When you see users struggling to succeed, you take it as a personal challenge to understand why and help the team build a better product. You love learning new things. You love researching new tech and driving forward with the implementation details. Your focus is on frontend JavaScript code, but you can dig in wherever needed. PHP, Python, CSS, build tools, shell scripts, you name it. You're ready to learn if you don't already know it.
