Gridware is on a mission to create a future without deadly wildfires. We’re a startup building hardware and software that monitors the power grid to prevent and detect faults that lead to wildfire ignition and blackouts. (More about Gridware below).

To make that happen, we’re currently looking for a backend engineer to join our growing team.

Why do we need you?

We’re manufacturing and deploying our first fleet of critical infrastructure monitoring devices to detect real world fault events that lead to wildfires. As an early team member you will have the opportunity to set the foundation for at-edge systems for protecting the power grid and preventing the next big blaze. The software that you build will change how the grid is designed, operated, and upgraded. You’ll work side-by-side with a highly driven team of mechanical/electrical/software engineers, researchers, and data scientists that have built technologies from satellites and 3D printers to secure operating systems and industrial-scale logistics software.

Responsibilities

This is what you’ll be doing:

• Architect data exfiltration pipelines for our fleet of field devices over low-bandwidth communications links
• Implement highly-available data warehousing with intuitive APIs and efficient query infrastructure
• Create monitoring and control software that flag issues with the power grid in real-time and enable operators to dispatch the appropriate resources needed to fix them
• Design intuitive access patterns that enable our data science teams to run analysis on collected data
• Deploy new and existing cloud infrastructure that scales with our growing customer-base
• Collaborate cross-functionally with our hardware team, data scientists, full-stack engineers, and embedded software engineers to supercharge their workflows

Required Skills

To move forward in the application process you should have at least all of these:

• Strong proficiency in backend scripting languages (preferably Python)
• Ability in constructing scalable data pipelines, data warehouses, and APIs
• Comfortable developing on UNIX with an understanding of networking, filesystems, and scripting
• Knowledge of version control, automated deployments, testing pipelines, and container configuration
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure solutions such as AWS, GCP, Azure
• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience

Bonus Skills

Your application will have a higher chance of standing out, if you have one (or more) of the following skills or experiences. If you, however, have all of the required skills but none of the bonus skills we still encourage you to apply.

• Familiarity with cloud-architecture to support distributed, low-power devices
• Has built real-time systems using GraphQL
• Familiarity with serverless
