Applied AI Software Engineer

Please note that this is an applied ML role, playing with LLMs in your spare time counts, that’s how our founders got started. You will NOT be doing deep research on new model architectures, we'll leave GPT-5 to OpenAI. Even if you think you only partially meet what we're looking for, APPLY!

Buildt is an AI tool to help developers quickly search, understand and extend large codebases. Engineers have to work with multi million line codebases; our LLM-powered tool makes this simple. Buildt understands what your code does, not just what it is, like a human engineer. It also has a perfect understanding of the relationship and dependencies between different snippets of code. We call this our Knowledge Engine. Our next phase is to build and open up this Knowledge Engine via an API for others to build on top of.

It’s an exciting time to join Buildt. We’re a YCombinator W23 startup with US VCs such as SOMA Capital, UpHonest Capital and Lakestar backing us. We also count Angel investors such as Amjad Masad (Replit) Suranga Chandratillake (Balderton), and executives from Microsoft, Gopuff, Oracle, Uber, Google, etc.

We’re looking for someone who can hack together prototypes quickly, get things out the door, and iterate. You'll also have experience with embeddings and have the ability to take models and figure out how to speak to them in a way that yields different results. We're looking for someone who is not a purist about languages and is comfortable writing in several programming languages along the journey. A love of contributing to Open Source projects would be a huge green flag to us.

REQUIRED SKILLS Proficiency in Javascript & Typescript Experience in developing complex applications with NodeJS and NestJS Understanding and usage of Git, with a focus on CI/CD processes, preferably Github Actions Robust understanding of data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns Familiarity with modern frontend frameworks, specifically React, and CSS frameworks like Tailwind CSS Proficiency in creating and interacting with RESTful APIs, including API design principles Experience working in Agile environments, with methodologies like Scrum or Kanban Experience with large language models like GPT, including tools and processes for monitoring model performance Experience with third-party integrations, such as payment gateways or other external APIs Demonstrated ability to thrive in a fast-paced team environment, with a focus on innovative solutions in conversational AI

PREFERRED SKILLS Comprehensive knowledge of relational and vector databases, such as SQL, HNSW Understanding of text processing functionalities, like embeddings Experience with serverless architectures, such as Google Cloud or Firebase Proficiency in containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and microservices architecture Familiarity with Test-Driven Development (TDD) using testing frameworks (e.g., Jest)
