Job Title: Analytics Platform Engineer

Overview and Job Description: We are seeking an Analytics Platform Engineer to join our team and help build our next-gen analytics platform.

The Company:

OneChronos is a technology company at the intersection of Capital Markets, Machine Learning and Auction Theory. We’re bringing “Smart Markets,” the academic term for markets that match counterparties using mathematical optimization, to finance. Smart Markets have a proven ability to outperform traditional auctions, and the theory underpinning them was the subject of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Economics.

Our goal is to expand the pie of trades that can occur, by empowering users with venue-level tools to better manage and express their trading or risk management objectives. OneChronos is a Y Combinator alum and venture backed start-up company with offices in New York City’s Soho neighborhood. Take a look at our launch post on Hacker News for more information: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30247159

We’re a company of mostly engineers, founded by engineers, and every person at the company is an individual contributor in some form.

The Job:

Our systems are built for the massive speed and scale of algorithmic trading. We work in terms of terabytes and billions of rows daily, and every layer of our technology needs to be performance-tuned to handle some of the worlds largest and highest velocity datasets. As a small company, we are rapidly and continually improving our analytics platform to keep up with our large and growing datasets, and solve complex problems efficiently and fast.

We are looking for an engineer with a knack for taking initiative and proposing creative engineering solutions that will take our data platform to the next level. That includes data engineering, but also software development in the form of process automation and customer-facing analytics products. The ideal candidate will be familiar with handling multiple real-time and historical data streams, and have a strong understanding of data engineering principles. You will be responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure necessary to support our analytics initiatives, including data pipelines, ETL processes, scalable data platform solutions, as well as working with the business side to bring forth the most value from our data. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work with cutting-edge technologies and make a significant impact on our data-driven decision-making processes.

Responsibilities:

  1. Work with both business teams and engineers to understand and make sense of our data, derive value by uncovering hidden relationships, and research the most advanced engineering techniques to store, process, and productionize it.
  2. Develop and maintain robust data pipelines to ingest, process, and transform data from various sources, ensuring data quality and integrity throughout the process.
  3. Implement ETL processes to extract, transform, and load data into data warehouses and analytical databases for reporting and analysis purposes.
  4. Optimize data storage, retrieval, and orchestration processes to improve performance and efficiency, utilizing cloud-based technologies such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or Azure.
  5. Work closely with data scientists and analysts to support their data needs and provide technical expertise in data modeling, schema design, and query optimization.
  6. Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines to identify and resolve issues in a timely manner, ensuring maximum uptime and reliability of the analytics platform.
  7. Stay up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices in data engineering, continuously seeking opportunities to enhance our data infrastructure and processes.
  8. Document technical specifications, data flows, and system architectures to facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration among team members.
  9. Develop software to automate and remove trudgery from the above.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent work experience.
  2. Solid understanding of data engineering concepts, including data modeling, ETL, and data warehousing.
  3. Proficiency in programming. We’re a company of polyglots, but the languages we use in data engineering are mostly SQL, Python, Rust, and Typescript.
  4. Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure) and their data services (e.g., S3, Redshift, BigQuery).
  5. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail, with the ability to analyze complex data issues and implement effective solutions.
  6. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  7. Eagerness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Don’t be deterred if you haven’t used the specific technologies listed. We’re more interested in fast learners than people with specific language or platform experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Metabase, Superset)
  2. Understanding of various data formats (e.g. Parquet, Arrow)
  3. Experience with stream processing and big data analytics
  4. 1+ years of experience in an engineering or data-focused role at a software company or data provider, or similar
  5. Entrepreneurial spirit and ability to take a project from start to finish

Benefits:

  • Competitive compensation (cash and equity)
  • Hybrid and remote work flexibility
  • Medical, dental and vision insurance
  • 401(k) plan
  • Subsidized health & wellness program
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Competitive vacation policy
