The pandemic has forced many businesses to digitalise their businesses just to stay afloat and relevant.
Despite the importance of digitalising, many businesses and SMEs are still struggling with the process due to lack of knowledge, skills and experience.
This is where Selangor Information Technology & Digital Economy Corporation (Sidec) comes in.
Aiming to lead Selangor’s digital transformation in becoming ASEAN’s digital hub, Sidec, has been actively providing support to businesses in recent years.
Selangor has the highest number of SMEs in Malaysia with 98.5% of business establishments in Malaysia being SMEs.
The lack of awareness and knowledge related to business digital transformation plays a part in causing majority of SMEs to fall behind the digital race.
A survey done by SME Corp and Huawei shows that 60% of the total SMEs do not know about available financing options.
“As a mandated government agency, Sidec is committed to creating an innovative digital ecosystem that will inspire new digital talents that will help to build competitive regional technology companies, ultimately propelling Selangor to become the digital hub of Southeast Asia,” said Yong Kai Ping, CEO of Sidec.
The main takeaways of the Selangor SME Digitalisation Matching Grant through SIDEC during 2021 were:
Sidec aims to strengthen and grow Selangor’s digital ecosystem for SMEs by nurturing digital talents and accelerating local startups to become regional tech icons.
Moreover, Sidec has also recently concluded its sixth edition of the Selangor Smart City and Digital Economy Convention.
As one of Sidec’s main annual events since 2016, the convention is regarded as Southeast Asia’s premier smart city and digital economy convention and its aim is to configure the frameworks and solutions for the future of the region’s smart cities and digital economy.
Fintech and artificial intelligence (AI) will be the next focus for the Selangor Accelerator Programme as they are a huge part of the next digital evolution.
By venturing into these areas, the agency hopes to foster more talents that will in turn, propel Selangor to become Southeast Asia's leading Smart State by 2025.
