Starting up a business can be challenging, and often times having financial support goes a very long way.

In Malaysia, there are a range of government organizations that provide grants for startups and new businesses.

Below is a comprehensive list (last update: 24th Feb 2021):


Suruhanjaya Koperasi Malaysia (SKM)

SKM provides matching grants ranging from RM50,000 up to RM300,000

This program is focused on increasing cooperative involvement in potential and viable business activities to increase cooperative income.

Grants Available:

  • Startup (Matching grant up to RM50k)
  • Scale-up (Matching grant up to RM150k)
  • Advanced (Matching grant up to RM300k)


MATRADE

MATRADE provides a broad range of grants for businesses mainly focus on trading (import/export) sector ranging from RM200,000 all the way up to RM5 million.

Grants Available:

  • Service Export Fund (Matching grant up to RM5 million)
  • Market Development Grant (Reimbursable grant up to RM200k)
  • Youth Exporters Development Program (Matching grant up to RM200k)
  • Bumiputera Exporters Development Programme (Matching grant up to RM200k)
  • Women Exporters Development Program (Matching grant up to RM200k)
  • Mid-tier Companies Development Program (Partial grant with variable amount)


MOSTI

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) provides grants for technology companies ranging from RM500,000 up to RM15 million.

Grants available:

  • Combatting Pandemic Grant (Matching grant up to RM4 million)
  • Strategic Research Fund (Matching grant up to RM15 million)
  • Bridging Fund (Matching grant up to RM4 million)
  • Technology Development Fund I (Matching grant up to RM1 million)
  • Technology Development Fund II (Matching grant oup to RM3 million)
  • Applied Innovation Fund (Matching grant up to RM500k)


Public-Private Research Network (PPRN)

The PPRN grant aims to close the technological knowledge gap, increase productivity, and strengthen Malaysian economic development through innovation and commercialization programs.

Grants Available:

  • PPRN Grant (Matching grant of up to RM50k)


SIRIM

SIRIM provides grants from RM200,000 for companies focused on manufacturing and trade (imports / exports).

Grants Available:

  • GroomBig (Matching grant with no limit)
  • Fraunhofer Programme (Matching grant of up to RM200k)


TERAJU

Teraju provides grants for Bumiputera-majority companies ranging from RM500,000 up to RM30 million.

The grant is focused on creating a tipping point for private investment initiatives, especially in high-impact NKEA sectors.

Grants Available:

  • Facilitation Fund (Matching grant of RM500k - RM30 million)


MDEC

MDEC provides grants and a wide range of programmes focused on supporting companies contributing to the digital economy.

Grants available:

  • SME Business Digitalisation Grant (Matching grant up to RM5000)
  • Smart Automation Grant (Matching grant of up to 50% of project, capped at RM200k)
  • Global Tech Fund for Investments (Partial grant up to 30% of approved project cost)
  • Global Tech Fund for Nurturing Global Champions (Partial grant up to 50% of approved project cost)
  • Development Fund (Matching grant up to RM150k)


Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA)

MIDA provides grants of up to 1 million to drive investment and growth into the manufacturing and services sectors in Malaysia.

Grants Available:

  • Domestic Investment Strategic Fund (Matching grant up to RM1m)
  • Industry4WRD Intervention Fund (Matching grant up to RM500k)


Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PNS)

PNS provides grants of up to RM100,000 to encourage local entrepreneurs to convert their conventional business to a franchise business.

Grants Available:

  • Franchise Development Fund (Repayment grant of up to RM100k)


Malaysian Technology Development Corporation (MTDC)

MTDC provides grants up to RM4 million for technology commercialisation and promoting the adoption of technologies by local companies.

Grants Available:

  • CRDF I (Partial grant of up to RM500k or 70% of eligible expenses)
  • CRDF II (Partial grant of up to RM4m or 70% of eligible expenses)
  • CRDF III (Partial grant of up to RM4m or 50% of eligible expenses)
  • Technology Acquisition Fund (Partial grant up to 4m or 70% of technology costs and 50% of equipment costs)
  • Halal Technology Development Fund I (Matching grant up to RM2m)
  • Halal Technology Development Fund II (Matching grant up to RM4m)


SMECorp

SMECorp provides grants of up to RM500,00, along with a wide range of on-going services to support SMEs and startups.

Grants Available:

  • GEB Programme (Bumiputera-only Matching Grant up to RM500k or 50% of project cost, capped at RM1m)
  • Business Scale-up Program (Matching grant of up to RM400k)
  • Bumiputera Enterprise Enhancement Programme (Matching grant up to RM500k)
  • Business Accelerator Program 2.0 (Matching grant of up to 50% of total approved cost)


Cradle Fund

Cradle provides grants ranging from MYR500,000 to RM2,000,000. 

The grants are mainly focused on helping early stage technology startup companies get their prototype to market, as well as preliminary stages of commercialization.

Grants available:

  • CIP Ignite (Conditional Grant of up to RM500k)
  • CIP Accelerate (Conditional Grant of up to RM2 million)
