The Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has just announced his resignation.

The announcement was made on his official Twitter account today.

The former premier was in power for a total of 655 days.

This comes as a shocking surprise considering many Malaysians were expecting Mahathir to continue staying until after the APEC conference in November.
