OpenAI's Chief Executive Sam Altman has been dismissed from the AI startup he co-founded, after the board lost confidence in his leadership.
This is a major upheaval in Silicon Valley, coming soon after OpenAI launched the hugely popular ChatGPT chatbot.
The board said Altman had not been fully transparent in his communications with them, which restricted their ability to carry out their duties.
It's unclear what exactly he failed to disclose.
Altman said he "loved his time at OpenAI" and it had been "transformative" in a tweet after the combative announcement.
OpenAI propelled Altman into the spotlight after releasing ChatGPT last year.
He became the leading voice on AI, but also advocated for regulation, warning of risks.
Just a day before his firing, he spoke about AI being the greatest technological leap yet.
Altman helped start OpenAI in 2015, attracting investment from tech luminaries.
He left his role at startup accelerator Y Combinator in 2020 to focus on OpenAI.
The launch of ChatGPT made him hugely prominent as the "father of ChatGPT".
