At ReadMe, we’re committed to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace. We welcome people of all backgrounds, experiences, abilities, and perspectives. We are an equal opportunity employer and a pleasant and supportive place to work. We'd love to have you come join us here! ReadMe is open to hiring folks fully remote in the US, hybrid, or in-person at our San Francisco HQ. Not sure if you’d be the right fit? Apply anyway! We’d love to see your application.

We’re passionate about developer experience. If you are too, stick around! Have you ever been working on a text editor and thought, wow, I know exactly how to make this ten times better! Or maybe you loooove getting down and dirty with Markdown as a spec and want to see how far you can take it. If you’re thinking, “Did they read my mind?” this might just be the role of your dreams.

ReadMe is special because it’s one of the only places on the internet where developers write and read such a significant amount of Markdown content. If you’re interested in Markdown as a spec and want to have an impact on that space, ReadMe will give you the opportunity to work at scale with Markdown in a way that will affect the way thousands of developer hubs are written and edited!

We're a small team of humans (and one owl 🦉) working together to shape the developer landscape through documentation—and we’re growing! That’s where you come in.

🦉 What we do

ReadMe helps companies build beautiful, personalized, and interactive developer hubs. If you’ve ever visited the developer docs for Intercom, Airbnb, or Notion, you’ve used ReadMe! We love what we do because it’s so much more than just docs. We’re providing tools for teams to create and manage beautiful documentation with ease. You can read more about what it’s like to work at ReadMe on our careers page, or our Key Values page.

We've written on our blog in the past about how we interview, and feel free to browse our other blog posts as well if it strikes your fancy!

💞 You’ll be working with…

  • Kelly, our resident Slate/React engineer, who’s been working on our new editor for the past year. You’ll become bffs with him!

  • Rafe, our Head of Engineering, and resident Markdown fanboy.

✅ What you’ll do here

  • We’re in the process of developing a new text editor! You’ll have a huge impact on driving that project forward, plus maintaining and improving our editor for years to come. You can play around with what we’ve done so far here: https://docs.readme.com/discuss-new

  • Come up with creative ideas for building out our ReadMe-flavored Markdown, like adding support for callouts: https://rdmd.readme.io/docs/callouts

  • Add UI on top of Markdown and make sure the Markdown engine works like a charm.

💙 You’ll love this job if you are…

  • Ecstatic about the way people express themselves in documentation

  • Interested in how Markdown can enable new documentation experiences.

  • Familiar with text processing and visual editors! (We use unified and Slate.js.)

  • Excited about solving the big technical challenges around word processing performance.

🌱 How you’ll grow in one month

  • Meet your fellow front-enders and start learning the ReadMe product!

  • Help solve bugs related to Markdown processing.

  • Get familiar with our Markdown engine and all the ways we use it.

  • Learn about our plans for improvements to our editor.

🪴 Within a two months, you’ll…

  • Start pairing on editor features.

  • Close a bigger ticket on the Editor Pod board yourself!

  • Develop opinions on extending Markdown syntax.

🌳 Within three months, you’ll…

  • Use your expertise to brainstorm future components, whose stack ranges from our Markdown engine, to the UI in our Markdown editor.

  • Work with Marketing to launch the new editor to all our customers!

🛣️ What’s the hiring process like?

  1. We can’t wait to read your resume and (hopefully personality-filled) cover letter! Let us know what excites you about Markdown, and help us get to know you better!

  2. If we think we might be a good fit for you, we’ll set up a 30 minute phone chat with Rafe! He’ll tell you more about the role, and get a chance to hear about your experiences.

  3. Next will be a second 30 minute phone interview with Kelly, our Slate/React Engineer, where we’ll dive a bit more into your background.

  4. Then we’ll invite you to an "onsite" interview conducted over Zoom! These usually take 3.5 to 5 hours including an hour break in between. We are able to be flexible with the schedule and split it up over two days if that works best for you! We start with a 15-minute get-to-know-you with the Front End Engineering team so you can meet the people you’ll be working with, and then have you talk with people one-on-one later on.

  5. We’ll let you know how things went within a week! If it still seems like a good fit all around, we’ll extend you an offer! If not, we will update you to let you know so you aren’t left hanging.

✨ Our benefits include…

  • Unlimited PTO with a three-week minimum. 🏝

  • Fully covered medical, dental, and vision insurance for you, and 50% for your dependents. 🩺

  • A One Medical membership. 🧑‍⚕️

  • A wellness stipend for therapy of up to $350 per month. 😌

  • A gym or fitness stipend of up to $150 per month. 🏋️

  • One-to-one donation matching of up to $1,000 per year. 💸

  • Twelve weeks of paid parental leave after the birth or adoption of a child. 🐣

  • Work from home office stipend of $500. 🖥

  • For fully remote employees, a stipend of $300 per month is available for a co-working space. 🧑‍💻

  • Three offsite retreats per year to get together with coworkers and plan for the quarter ahead. ✈️

  • Take a look at our handbook for more information on our benefits! 📘
