The Scientist reports directly to the Chief Scientific Officer and is responsible for leading assay development. Given the mutation rate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the Scientist will regularly monitor and conduct ongoing surveillance of variants and ensure assay sensitivity remains uncompromised, as well as execute any necessary adjustments to the assay to maintain specificity. Duties include, but are not limited, to: providing technical information and experimental assay design; data analysis and management; and instrument & project trouble-shooting.
Daily/Monthly Responsibilities
-Performing laboratory R&D to push Uh-Oh's technology platform forward:
-Isothermal amplification, RT-LAMP, RT-PCR
-LAMP primer design
-Assay optimization
-Sample preparation
-Staying up to date on the in vitro diagnostic scientific literature and commercial space
-Working closely with a multidisciplinary team
-Working with archived clinical and analytical samples in a BSL-2+ laboratory
-Performing benchwork and laboratory experiments with Uh-Oh's prototype and commercial products
-Conducting new product development in a regulated environment
-Maintaining laboratory records in Uh-Oh Labs' quality management system
-Supervising the work of research associates that may be hired in the near term
-Advising management and operations on requirements for material purchases for manufacturing
-Communicating with the Chief Technology Officer to ensure assay integration with hardware and software teams
Minimum Requirements & Qualifications
-PhD in molecular biology, bioengineering, or a related field with a focus on development of molecular diagnostics, plus additional experience (preferably in industry) as outlined below -Scientist I, 0–2 years of relevant experience; Scientist II, 2–4 years of relevant experience; Scientist III, 4–7 years of relevant experience -Ability to work independently and take initiative to learn new skills and concepts -Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-moving team environment -Experience with performing general laboratory duties such as preparing reagents and basic maintenance of equipment -Exemplary communication skills and ability to work on a multidisciplinary team -Knowledge of statistical methods for experimental design and analyses
Preferred Qualifications
-Hands-on experience with RT-LAMP, RT-PCR, and other amplification methods -Familiarity with LAMP primer design and basic bioinformatics tools (BLAST, Clustal) -Experience working within a regulated environment (e.g., ISO 9001, 13485) -Understanding of fluorescence and FRET -Experience with intellectual property protections (US utility patents) -Location
Uh-Oh Labs’ headquarters is in Santa Clara, CA. This is a non-remote position, however for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic, this role has a flexible work from home policy for safety and convenience. All in-person work will be conducted following the most rigorous and up-to-date public health guidelines. The candidate will also be expected to travel to events and meetings as requested by management.
