College Pulse is the leading research and analytics company focused on today’s college students. Our mission is to supply a live stream of continuous and accurate data and insight into what students are thinking so that companies, institutions, and the public can better serve this important demographic that sustains them. In the past three years, we have built the largest database of college student opinion with over 500K student panelists from over 1500 universities in all 50 states. The data we collect powers a suite of research offerings trusted by Fortune 500 corporations, universities, foundations, media outlets, and policymakers. We are a remote-first company backed by top-tier investors, including Norwest Venture Partners, Madrona Ventures, GSV Accelerate, Y-Combinator, and Paul Graham.

THE OPPORTUNITY

As a full-stack engineer at College Pulse, you’ll become an integral part of a lean engineering team (only 4 engineers including you!) with outsize impact in terms of users and scale. This means you’ll get to work on every part of our core product and deploy to production regularly. From day one, you’ll be working with large data and systems (100M+ answers collected from hundreds of thousands of students). You will be involved in the design and implementation of new data products, apis, and user interfaces. You’ll write maintainable and scalable code, and help shape our best practices and processes as we grow our engineering team. From day one you’ll have a lasting impact on the codebase and engineering practices, and you’ll take on significant responsibilities in the organization.

THE TECH STACK

On the back end, Pulse uses NodeJS, AWS, and Mongodb, along with other scripting languages for smaller one-off products. On the front end, Pulse uses React and React Native to power our web and mobile clients, in combination with other open source frameworks like Redux, GraphQL, GatsbyJS, and component libraries. We also make extensive use of D3.js to build interactive data visualizations. We strive to keep our stack up to date with the latest web technology to make our applications as performant and maintainable as possible.

QUALIFICATIONS

• 3+ years work experience as a full-stack engineer (or similar role)
• Strong proficiency with NodeJS and React/Redux
• Experience working with high-performance NoSQL databases and data products at scale
• Ability to lead full-stack system design of new products and product features.
• Excitement for developing scalable and maintainable APIs
• A track record of working well in teams of multiple engineers and non-engineer stakeholders.
• Experience with AWS, continuous integration, and devops technologies (preferred)
• Proficiency in D3.js, AWS, MongoDB (preferred)

WITHIN 1 MONTH, YOU’LL

• Pair program with your teammates to tackle your first support tickets.
• Become familiar with our product areas: desktop and mobile user-facing apps, client-facing products, and internal data-visualization tools.
• Release your first features to production.
• Get to know the whole Pulse team.

WITHIN 3 MONTHS, YOU’LL

• Build, launch, and support your first standalone product. You’ll work closely with designers and other engineers to drive your first client-facing product through to production.
• Own major feature areas of the user-facing application.
• Write internal documentation for your features and systems so other engineers and stakeholders are brought along with your decisions.
• Help make architectural decisions about our stack and infrastructure.

WITHIN 6 MONTHS, YOU’LL

• Participate in an entire product cycle: from design and brainstorming, all the way through to client feedback and support.
• Be responsible for the planning, scoping, design, and implementation of new features
• Act as the owner for most front-end features.
• Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to define priorities and set delivery goals.
• Help develop plans for expanding our engineering team: interviewing, hiring, and growing company culture.
