Engineering Manager (Editor Team)

The BioRender editor is the core of our product and it has revolutionized how 1M+ scientists communicate their research all over the world. The editor is where we provide personalized content and creative web-based tools. These powerful tools enable scientists to easily create beautiful visualizations, easy-to-read posters for conferences, and informative slide show presentations all while giving and receiving feedback in real-time.

Building a visual editor on the web that is snappy and user-friendly comes with a fun set of technical challenges! We have to optimize rendering using React, figure out how to generate and export large files, cache vector images with complicated paths to reduce rerendering, and get it to play nicely with different browsers. 

We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to guide the Editor team to deliver critical features. You’re someone who is excited about web-based challenges and passionate about empowering engineers to do their best work. Your team will create an editor with all the editing capabilities (such as graphs, animation, 3D etc.) to equip scientists with the necessary tools to communicate science faster, which in turn will enable scientists to exponentially increase the rate of scientific advancements, cure terrible diseases, and tackle climate change. 

Example projects you’ll lead:

• BioRender’s Poster Builder tool where scientists can now design beautiful posters in minutes
• Building tooling to measure and monitor editor performance - this will enable us to detect critical issues before releases
• Custom implementation of text with a canvas renderer to improve performance, deploy highly requested features (including lists), and improve the NPS of text-heavy files like posters

You will:

• Manage, support, and grow a team of 8+ engineers on the Editor team who are responsible for deploying all features to the canvas and surrounding UI in the editor
• Cultivate a supportive and positive engineering culture where the team is empowered to do their best work and deliver the best graphics editor for scientists in the world
• Own the technical architecture of the editor and drive the ​​strategy and priorities of editor related features all while advocating for a user-first approach 
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders (leadership, Creative, CX, and Product teams) to become the point of contact for all things related to the editor
• Partner with the Product Manager to ensure that the team is using agile methodologies
• Set the team up for success by working with engineers on their personal objectives and creating personal development plans

Our ideal fit:

• Experience managing high performing product engineers and consistently delivering value to users
• A track record of establishing processes or introducing tools that enable engineers to move more efficiently
• Hands-on experience in modern large-scale web applications development (React is a plus)
• Collaborating successfully with recruiting to build a remarkable A-player engineering team
