The dark-stores market is currently exploding off the back of existing macro trends. The 2020 pandemic has accelerated this trend by heightening people's desire to not go to the shops. This new behaviour will stick. We founded Fancy in January 2020 and since then have launched and are scaling fast in 4 cities around the UK. After graduating YC last summer, we’ve taken on substantial investment to be able to scale the business as quickly and effectively as possible.
The Role
We're looking for an engineering leader that will lay the groundwork for our engineering culture, be responsible for growing the team to 10s of engineers as they help grow and support the user base into the millions. The Director of Engineering will partner closely with the CEO and take ownership of engineering at the company.

- You understand the need for leanness in a startup and place emphasis on creating change quickly, removing unnecessary steps and process where needed.
- You understand trade-offs when building new products.
- You're really passionate for new technologies and get excited about huge opportunities.
- You have strong opinions on effective engineering culture with examples of how you implemented these key principles.
- You are prepared to dive in and roll up your sleeves to get something working.
- An experienced full stack developer (coding for 4+ years minimum) that specialises in backend.
- You have experience building APIs and large scale production systems from scratch.
- Can dive into new technologies and understand then evaluate them quickly.
Responsibilities:
- Build and grow an ambitious and world class engineering team.
- Implement and foster the engineering culture based around principles of ownership and user journey.
- Partner with the CEO and Product Team to develop technical product strategy.
- Take ownership of the engineering at the company from internal tools to our user facing android and iOS apps.
- Craft and execute best-in-class engineering processes.
