Fynn is looking for an Associate General Counsel to support the team on a wide variety of regulatory, transactional, and operational matters.
At the outset, this role will have a deep regulatory focus, but that will quickly expand to cover a more broad set of responsibilities. To that end, this could be an ideal opportunity for a rock-solid regulatory attorney with a desire to become an in-house generalist. Or it could be a great match for a fintech generalist that wants to develop an expertise in consumer lending or privacy. It could even be a chance for an established attorney that wants to branch out into a compliance leadership role.
Bottom line, this is an early hire for a rapidly growing fintech lender, so it's a bit like reading a choose-your-own-adventure book, but with added perks like a 401k, income tax withholding, and performance reviews!
This role will partner with the rest of the Fynn team to:
- Serve as an in-house subject matter expert on the regulation of student lending at both the state and federal levels, tracking relevant changes and directives that may impact the company or our partner schools;
- Support Fynn’s growth and development efforts with accurate and pragmatic regulatory advice and in-depth legal risk assessments relevant to the company’s development of new financial products and expansion into new jurisdictions;
- Provide legal support for Fynn’s Compliance and Operational Risk Program, with the potential to take on oversight of compliance and audit over time;
- Support sales, customer success, and other internal stakeholders in fielding legal and compliance questions;
- Develop additional legal and compliance resources for contracting and regulatory compliance;
- Collaborate on the resolution of inquiries and complaints from customers and regulators;
- Assist with drafting and negotiating commercial contracts as needed;
- Maintain Fynn’s Policy and Procedure Library and collaborate on the development and improvement of internal policies, procedures, and processes;
- Work with the GC to own, update, and improve Fynn’s risk library;
- Project-manage various key legal and compliance projects;
- Recognize and properly escalate significant matters; and
- Support or own other legal projects as determined by the GC.
Required Qualifications:
- JD from a top tier law school and a license to practice in good standing in primary state of residence;
- 3-10 years combined law firm and in-house legal experience;
- Significant experience advising on consumer financial services matters;
- Strong legal research skills;
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; and
- Ability to learn and leverage new technology quickly and effectively.
Desired Qualifications:
- Prior experience in fintech lending;
- Prior experience performing in-depth legal risk assessments on consumer financial services regulations;
- Significant experience supporting the compliance function of a consumer lender;
- Broad legal experience covering transactional, regulatory, employment, and dispute resolution matters;
- Experience working with regulators to quickly and effectively resolve inquiries, complaints, or information requests; and
- Significant experience providing succinct, engaging, and effective training on legal and compliance matters.
Location and Travel:
- This role is remote and can be located anywhere in the United States.
- Limited travel is expected, primarily for corporate gatherings and industry conferences.
